It's hard to tell exactly what was done, but the edges are clean and the face is flat with use marks. The face is not real hard. The nice deep trademark reads hay budden, manufacturing co, brooklyn, n. Y, and the weight mark on the side reads 147. This hay budden was made in 1895, the anvil has the inspector marks 22 on the rear foot and the serial number 19544 on the front foot. This is a no reserve auction. Made in brooklyn, new york, this early hay budden is the first style anvil hay budden made and is considered the most attractive style produced. It has a shorter waist and doesn't look as top heavy as later styles. This anvil was made frmo the best american wrought iron and faced with the best crucible cast steel plate. Postman's book also states that hay buddens were considered the best american made anvil. Hay budden claims they used the bets material available and were produced by the finest american craftsmen. It is still considered the rolls royce of blacksmith anvils and is one of the most sought after anvils today.
