Matchlessantiques is offering smiths and collectors this nice 80 pound vulcan blacksmith anvil was made by the illinois iron & bolt company, of carpentersville, illinois. This cast iron anvil is in nice condition. The face is mdae from one solid piece of english tool steel and is flat, with some use marks on it.

The edges are clean with only a few nicks. There are no repairs or damage.

See pictures. The body of the anvil is made from the best lake superior charcoal iron. The horn is covered with untempered steel. The anvil has the size number mark 8 between the feet, which stands fro 80 pounds. This anvil pattern is the second pattern made by vulcan and is referred to the modern style and would have been produced in the twentieth century.

The trademark was third trademark vulcan used and the word brand was replaced with reg. Us pat. Off. The anvil itself did not change physically. In richard postman's book, anvil in america, in reference to the earlier vulcans he states, sometime in the 1880s or '90s, the company changed their anvil style from the old english which was very blocky, to the modern style. This anvil has the last trademark used and would have been produced in the twentieth century. The measurement of this anvil are overall length 18 7/8, face 3 1/4 x 11 3/8, horn 7 1/2, height 9, hardie hole 3/4, pritchel hole 1/2, base 7 1/2 x 8, actual weight 80 lb. This anvil would be an excellent anvil for the shop, it really has an excellent rebound and real nice sized working area.
