The edges on the workign side have nicks and chips. Whoever the smith was woh worked on this anvil must have spent years testing his newly shapened chisel on the side of the anvil.

Testing a new sharpened chisel on the feet of your anvil was a fairly common practice. However the smith who tested chisels on this anvil took it to a whoel 'nother level giving this anvil a extra bit of character.

Note the 75 lb. Anvil shown in a couple pictures is not included in this auction. It's sohwn for comparison purposes. The anvil's trademark is gone, but this anvil has the traditional peter wright ledge on the feet. One odd feature is that the weight marks are on the opposite side that the trademark would be. The weight marks read 5 0 0, (which is the english stoneweight system for 560 lb. ). Pictures say a thousand words, so take a real close look.
