Rare Keen Kutter Hay Budden 100 Lb Blacksmith Anvil Up for auction is this very nice super rare keen cutter/kutter 100 lb anvil. It can be authenticated by researching through anvils in america by richard postman. After finding this anvil in the basement of a small farm house in southwest arkansas and purchasing it, i personally had a lengthy phone conversation (approx 1 hour) with richard postman himself in which he authenticated this anvil and verified it's origin, rarity and all markings and all details. Mr. Postman stated this anvil was produced by hay budden in brooklyn new york between 1914 and 1915 as a first production run for the simmons hardware co.
Of st. Louis missouri. Also nkown as keen kutter. In the first run of this anvil the gentleman stamping the #'s, lettering, and logo's during the forging process thought that common sense tells you that cutter is spelled with a c not a k, not realizing that spelling cutter with k was a trademark of the keen kutter line, and after a very short run of these anvil's ( approx 50) he was made aware of this mistake and it was corrected from there on out.
The markings on this anvil are as follows. It has the outline of the keen kutter logo with keen cutter stamped in the middle of it. It is also marked below that with black jakc warranted, and below that with the #100 and in this case it does stand for 100 lbs. The other side of the anvil is stamped with the #021 which mr postman told me was the steel batch #. The front of the waist is stamped with the #8 which was the inspector's # that inspected the anvil. The front of the base near the bottom is stamped with the serial # 210791 in which he told me would date the anvil from somewhere between 1914 and 1915. eH also went on to tell me that this is a 2 piece anvil with a wrought iron base and a hand forged steel heel, face and horn. This anvil does have the hardy and pritchel hole and actual weihgt is 100 pnds. Please look at all pictures good the face does have some dents and dings and the nose is blunted.
But i would say it is in good used condition. Let's face it this anvil is almost 100 yrs old and people bought these to use. Mr postman also told me that for years he only new where 1 of these approximately 50 anvils were, and it belonged to him and it now resides in a muesem, but then he laughed and said now i know where 2 of them are. Keep in mind hay budden anvil's are known as the finest american anvil's ever produced and this one is coupled with one of the finest names in antique tools keen kutter. Please check out my feedback. I would like to express my appreciation to mr richard postman for his willingness to share his knowledge and information in this field it has been a big help.
